About Sudbrook, its shipyard and South America

Join us at our latest Newport Transporter Bridge Project 'Bridge Talk', exploring a forgotten industry on our Severn Estuary!

If you scan the estuarine horizon eastwards from the top walkway of our Newport Transporter Bridge, you can clearly see the Severn Crossings. We all know that the crossing we can't see -the Severn Tunnel -is celebrated in Sudbrook - but did you know that this important settlement also had a thriving shipbuilding industry with a substantial global reach?

Join speaker Richard Clammer, author of a carefully-researched and beautifully-illustrated book, as he tells the fascinating story of Sudbrook village, its forgotten shipyard and the many vessels built there.

As well as documenting Sudbrook's fascinating history, Richard's book also provides the first detailed personal and professional biography of T.A. & C.H. Walker who, despite being two of Britain’s foremost civil engineering contractors of their time, have never previously received the recognition they deserve.
