About Free Gallery Tour of "Representing the Rising: Chartism and Art in Newport"

Join Ray Stroud and David Osmond as they reveal the stories behind highlights of the exhibition "Representing the Rising: Chartism and Art in Newport".

The exhibition depicts Newport’s 1839 Chartist Uprising as captured by artists past and present; exploring the contemporary scene, portraiture and commemoration. The show pulls together work from Newport Museum’s impressive Chartist art collection alongside significant loans and reproductions. Representing the Rising features important new acquisitions and the recently restored 1840 portrait of Lieutenant Gray, which once adorned the walls of the Westgate Hotel.
‘The Chartists in Newport: A History in Photographs’, a slide show of work by Ian Walker, will run in Oriel Porth alongside the main display.

A catalogue to accompany the exhibition is on sale for £10 at the main desk on floor 2, in Gallery 57 Ltd and online http://sixpointscardiff.com/products/representing-the-rising

This exhibition is part of the Art on the Hill 2024 programme.
