About Flutterology: Exploring the moths and butterflies of Newport Wetlands

Join us for Flutterology, a fascinating journey into the hidden world of moths and butterflies at RSPB Newport Wetlands. We'll begin the morning by opening a moth trap set the night before, revealing an incredible variety of species that have visited under the cover of darkness.

With over 2,500 species of moth in the UK, these remarkable insects come in an astonishing range of colours, patterns, sizes and personalities - from tiny micromoths no bigger than a fingernail to spectacular hawk moths and beautifully camouflaged species that disappear against bark and leaves. You'll be guided through the catch by the County Moth Recorder, who will share expert knowledge, identification tips and the amazing stories behind these often-overlooked creatures. After meeting our nocturnal visitors, we'll head out onto the reserve to explore the rich habitats of Newport Wetlands in search of butterflies and day-flying moths. Along the way, we'll discover how to identify different species, learn about their fascinating life cycles and their adaptions.

Whether you're completely new to moths and butterflies or already have a passion for wildlife, this friendly workshop is a fantastic opportunity to see nature up close and discover the world of lepidoptera!
