About Lapwings and a World of Waders: Exploring Goldcliff Lagoons at Newport Wetlands

Join us for an in-depth guided experience exploring Lapwings and a world of waders at the internationally important Goldcliff Lagoons, at the eastern end of RSPB Newport Wetlands.

With their tumbling flight, distinctive ‘peewit’ calls and striking green and purple sheen, Lapwings are one of our most charismatic wading birds. Goldcliff provides an ideal setting to discover more about them, from the habitats they need to feed and breed, to the conservation work that helps give them a future. With autumn bringing increased numbers of waders to the wetlands, we never quite know what else might appear.

This event is deliberately limited to a small group, creating a more personal and engaging experience with plenty of time for discussion, questions and a closer look at the birds we encounter. The smaller group also gives us the freedom to stop, watch and share observations as the morning progresses.

We’ll begin at the RSPB Newport Wetlands Visitor Centre with a short introduction to Lapwings, waders and the remarkable landscape of the Gwent Levels. From there, we’ll travel in our own vehicles in convoy to Goldcliff Lagoons. Once there we’ll explore the lagoons and surrounding wet grassland, looking for Lapwings and the many other wading birds that make use of this special site. We will explore some of the challenges these ground-nesting birds face. We’ll also take a closer look at how Goldcliff is managed for wildlife, including the role of grazing animals, carefully managed water levels and predator fencing in creating suitable conditions for breeding waders. Along the way, we’ll explore some of the fascinating history behind the lagoons and why this landscape has become so important for wildlife.

Whether you already know your waders or simply want to learn more, this small-group experience offers the chance to slow down, look more closely and discover the fascinating lives of Lapwings and the other waders of Goldcliff Lagoons.
