About History at the Hub - The Redevelopment of Pill from 1962 to 1974
This talk looks at the redevelopment of Pill over the broad period of 1962 to 1974. It considers the poor post-war state of housing, and the reasons why Newport lagged other authorities at this time in providing houses fit for its growing population.
With the government of the day determined to knock down and replace what commonly became known as slum properties, this talk outlines why Pill was to become the centre of redevelopment in Newport and the decision-making process that resulted in good quality houses being demolished to be replaced by houses that were little better, if not worse. This talk also outlines why Baneswell was mainly saved from redevelopment, despite being designated a development area.
