About Exhibition: The Rookery

The past still weighs heavily on South Wales, a region of the country whose industrial heritage informs much of its contemporary identity. In common with other former heavily industrial areas there is a complex interplay between the display of labour’s past, as set out in it’s museums, heritage sites and monuments and the hard-nosed economics that created and then swept away that industry.

In light of this, John Crerar introduces his photographic project entitled “The. Rookery” that explores the site of a former rank of colliers’ houses surrounded by a spoil tip near Risca that has now been reclaimed by nature. Combining his own photographs with the photographs of the Victorian gentleman John Dillwyn Llewelyn and through the use of archive material and found objects, John seeks to present a narrative of social and economic change and environmental renewal that has echoed across the region over the last two hundred years.
