About Bridge Talk: The River Severn Ferries

We get wonderful views of the Severn from the top of the Transporter Bridge, so it’s a real pleasure that our 'Bridge Talks' return with the opportunity to discover the colourful history of the Beachley – Aust Ferry, which crossed the Severn from the earliest pilot scheme in 1926 until the opening of the Severn Bridge on September 8th 1966.

Speaker Tim Ryan's talk is illustrated with many, many photographs from his private collection, many, many artifacts and cine film dating back to 1939.
It is also illustrated with many, many stories collected by the speaker over many years. These stories are all true but almost unbelievable.
It is a real journey through the past and a lot of fun….

Tim Ryan was born and bred in Chepstow, vividly remembers using the Ferries as a young boy and his father, a blacksmith, did regular maintenance work on the ferries. He was also foreman welder on the Severn Bridge deck sections that were built in the Chepstow Shipyard.

Tim is a retired comprehensive schoolteacher in Chepstow who taught JK Rowling and was her House Head and made her Head Girl.
She never answers the begging letters….

Please note this talk will take place in the Gallery on Floor Three.

Once you have booked, you will receive an email closer to the date with more details, so please keep checking the Inbox of the email address you booked with!
